Artist Statement
My name is Renee Sala and I am a professional potter living in Victoria, on Vancouver Island. I create functional pottery with a strong, high-fired, white, porcelain-like clay. This material is a pleasure to work with as it is a wonderful canvas on which to apply glazes and textures. It also allows the pots to be light-weight, yet retain strength, which I think is integral to a beautiful and functional piece of pottery. The glazes I use are hand-mixed by me using natural, non-toxic, lead-free ingredients. All of my work is food-safe, and is safe for everyday use in the dishwasher, microwave, and oven.
I have been influenced over the years both by my mother, who is a master potter, and by my travels, which have been mostly in Asia. I think it is important to maintain a simplicity in life, and an attention to detail, and I hope that comes through in my work. I focus on smoothing the bottoms of my pieces that will rest on the surfaces of your home, and the edges that will touch your skin. I apply texture with hand-made stamps and other tools. I let the glazes work together with these textures in the kiln, and am excited to see the results after every firing.
My current line includes both thrown and slab-based work. I use colours that are rich and natural. The shapes and surfaces of my pieces are meant to reflect my influences and retain a degree of modernity. Hopefully, my pottery will be used in the home as part of a conscious decision to make everyday events more beautiful.
This Fall I'm introducing some fun after-school classes for kids, and evening classes for the crafty adult. Please have a look at the "FALL CLASSES" page to find out more!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and thank-you for your time!
Sincerely,
Renee Sala
